Varnhem church |
||
This church dates from the12th century. It has been ravaged
by fire a few times. Behind it is the ruins of a monastery. Four medieval
kings have been buried here : Erik Eriksson, Erik Knutsson, Knut Eriksson
and Inge the Elder. Birger Jarl ( the founder of Stockholm ) and his wife
did also chose this as their final resting place. Magnus Gabriel de la Gardie,
the owner of Läckö castle and several other estates ( for example the hunting-lodge that
is now the town
hall of Lidköping, and Höjentorp ), restored
the church in the 17th century, and is also buried here. |
Some more
photos of the church. In the monastery museum, there is a graveslab
with a runic inscription on it. |
